This coming week we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, on January 1, a Holy Day of Obligation. On this day, the Church invites us to begin the new year by fixing our eyes on Mary, who teaches us how to receive Christ and ponder God’s work in our lives. By honoring Mary as Mother of God, we affirm the great mystery of the Incarnation: that Jesus is truly God and truly man, and that God has chosen to enter our world through her faithful “yes.”
As usual, the collection for the Holy Day will benefit St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Adoration Schedule for New Year's
Eucharistic Adoration will end on New Year’s Eve at 5:30pm. There will be no Adoration on New Year’s Day or on Friday 2nd January. Adoration will start again after the 9:00am Mass on Saturday 3rd Jan 2026.
Prayers for the New Year
The Church also gives us two beautiful prayers to help us end the old year and begin the new one. On December 31, the Church encourages the praying of the Te Deum, a hymn of thanksgiving that allows us to look back over the past year with gratitude, acknowledging God’s presence in all things. On January 1, we are invited to pray the Veni Creator Spiritus, calling upon the Holy Spirit to guide, renew, and strengthen us in the year ahead. Both prayers carry a plenary indulgence.
The texts can be found below. I invite you to pray them at home with your family, or quietly on your own, as a way of closing one year and opening another in faith.
